Movement Poetry: Body as Score Workshop

Wrokshop/Scoring
ImaginaryZ Gallery, Hangzhou, China

Body as Score is an experimental workshop exploring the body as a site of writing, memory, and performance. Through movement, textual performance, objects, and improvisation, participants translated embodied experiences and social gestures into a collection of texts, images, and actions as self-portraits.

Materials were generated, transcribed, and rewritten into movement poems with collage editing. The experience transformed the space through scores that could be entered, performed, and reinterpreted.

This workshop is based on the publication The Unfamiliar Body, turning its methods of embodied writing into a collective process of making. Writing becomes an ongoing scoring cycle between language and the body.

So what if I don't take action! House, fragile shell, release
House, fragile vessel, release
/Enveloping/
Dust seems ready to scatter at a touch—finite, bounded
Air, scent, breathing
Dust, finite, boundary, space, breathing

-Lights on
The beginning was alright, too-
-Lights off
And then, not bad either-

END
NO, END
My legs are getting sore

-A performance of behavior constructed in reverse-

-Just wanting to spread ideas-

Where shall the possibilities go to hide?

The heart reads this lifetime

Plenty of battery power
Body heavy, head heavy
Purpose... heavy!

In a corner of the world—standing, listening, sitting, listening—radiating light

Right! Let's go!

/A soft embrace/
How do we embrace?
Ripples of memory, always intermittent

Unable to look directly
At the bottom of the frosted glass bottle

No matter what, I can't see through

What is she thinking? Or just zoning out?

In a daze
Coming back to reality, only to find a few more scrapes
Arms wrapped around herself
She lies flat on her back

Sunlight on the body and eyelids
Drowsiness sets in
