Helen Jiayu Zhang is an Eindhoven and Beijing based artist, designer, and performer. Her work challenges the boundary between art and design, which can go beyond the sole scope of graphics to embrace movement, text, experiences, and space. The work aligns itself with bodies doing things, rather than bodies expressing something. Her artistic research merges with the approach of design as a process-based practice, unlocking the essence within her subjects.


 The work initiates "conversation" of action dynamics as ephemeral sites—the production and subject, to create prospective conditions where perception perceives itself, gaining aisthetic relationally in between individuals.&#38;nbsp; The work is not outside the field, but it continually questions the terms by which the field recognises value.


 Through the media of design, she critically examines the position and importance of visual communication in relation to culture and society in an interdisciplinary creative system. By exploring the complexities of the mind-body relationship, the portrayal of the female body on stage, and the nuances between improvisation and composition, the space of work become generative and conversational. The relationships between space, work, and audiences are reconsidered.

Breathing, walking, watching, and touching are bodily actions that seem increasingly distant from our current life. Unconscious physical movements and unobserved fantasies are both intuitive and passively generated habitual ways of understanding the world. Through interaction with the world, we acquire knowledge and second-hand information.

Direct perception of the body is often overlooked, and the consciousness generated through physical observation is rarely emphasized. This exhibition provides clues for the body and mind to re-connect. Audiences’ physical manipulation and illusion in minds during the interaction within the space is the witness and definition of the artwork itself.

	The sand, as a sculptural object, fills the space. As an interactive object within the space, its definition and context change based on the audience's experience. The stone symbolizes eternity, a magnified form of a grain of sand. It serves as a tool to draw, a chair, a sculpture, a ritual, an object imbued with human touch and cultural significance, or something that is undefined and beyond its original function.

How do we breathe and move through the tangled disarray? We merge, so intently, into nature's pulse, our bodies drifting at the edges of feeling. Air drawn in, then exhaled into water. The body, a vessel, seeks its own fissure, to plunge into the conversation between site and air, absorbed by the cadence of breath. In the dance of light and shadow, we are here, yet not here—always, endlessly, telling the story of how we enter, what bridges the divide, and what unfolds in the act of becoming.

Like air for breath, consciousness, perception, thought, and behavior are omnipresent, constantly needed, yet often overlooked. In this exhibition, everyday phenomena are awakened and brought into focus. As beings who interact with the natural world, humans are perpetually forming connections with themselves, others, and the surrounding, generating new understandings.

The objects, incidents, and actions that serve as the connections are often referred to as intuition. Through our interactions with the world, we define the things we relate to, imbuing them with language, meaning, and emotion. Yet, these things have no inherent intent of their own. It is this lack of intent that allows the absurd and the unusual to become witnesses to art.

An interactive installation with performance screening meant to be projected in space. It invites audiences to explore the relationship between body, mind, and environment. Sand fills the space as both material and medium, shifting roles depending on audience interaction, while stones function as symbolic and functional objects—tools, seats, sculptures, or ritual forms. The sculptural objectc within space connect with the action of “zero-degree art” in the video, which acts as transition.

How do we sense boundaries—between the self and the air, the body and the site? Experience fragments through physicality: a tree watered, a sound heard, a rhythm felt. “The tree is both a medium and a self-contained entity. I am in the air, water is in the air, sound is in the air. Within the site of the tree, we circulate and mimic a natural rhythm. One tree encounters another. Under the shelter of the trees, I blend myself into the natural rhythm and constantly relocate myself in this enduring discourse. I navigate through their encounter, navigate between the sound of trees and the sound of my bodily presence, in and out. Swiftly or still, the trees sound together, weaving me into the entanglement and circulation of the air.”

self-directed and self-produced image poems. It annotates Descartes’ mind-body
problem from an artistic view. The book is divided into three chapters, each is an interpretation of dualism, physicalism, and idealism, gray,
black, and white.
In the virtual digital age, it evokes the definition and irreplaceability
of the body and soul in the world. We use our bodies to speak of the
"same". Content including literature, self-written poetry,
choreography, and interlaced videography.

	Black (body): The repetitive cycle of tying hair, including systematic ballet
steps and shadows of the movements visualize the controlled body. The text includes Dunbar's famous literary poem, We Wear Masks&#38;nbsp;and self-written
poetry.

The Unfamiliar Body defamiliarizes pedestrian movement and
prompts the viewer to consider another perspective of performing art and the connection
of design and dance with a conscious mind. A performance comprising individual
frames can be thought of as a photograph, sculpting the four-dimensional
motion.

The body is a vessel to be researched. This process workbook
translates the storytelling of dance into an experimental digital experience, a
newspaper, and a transient performance. The website enables the user to
experiment with the components of choreography. The newspaper, rendered at a
large scale, incites performance, turning the reader into a performer through
the act of unfolding.

The website and printed piece present different explorations
of three core chapters: Archive (movement as an inventory of motions)
demonstrates movements in five categories through deconstructing and
reorganizing; Space Arrangement (object, space, shape) unlocks sculptural
shapes of body and objects; Textual Performance (text, voice, lyric) inspires
users to explore with the potential of text, connect the body with script, and

Content is analyzed and formatted into a three-column
frame throughout two media. The navigation bar acts like a stage, framing the
interactive canvas in digital space. The subtitles guide the viewers with
hierarchical text on print media.

The Unfamiliar Body redefines performance. Movements are
cultural, sociological, and contextual. This distant and poetic artform can be
re-introduced and encouraged by re-examining everyday life and movement.

Future Unknown is a speculative educational exhibition reimagining multi-disciplinary art and design education. The exhibition holds multiple sections from difference departments in CAFA. Communication design took the position of viewing experimental communication design research as a holistic approach to design as a whole, and analysis design as a way of thinking to help navigate creative directions for future students. The exhibition expands the contribution of visual communication by emphasizing technology, experimentation, and discernment. Critically examines the position and importance of visual communication in relation to culture and society in an interdisciplinary environment.

136 Artists’ references are categorized into four quadrants, Image and Text, Objects and Incident, Film and Sound, Space and Experience. Numbers and position are generated from Hilbert Curve, which can be flatted or threaded into a 3D square. The position of all images are relative in the 3D space of the digital experience.

This is both the process and the result of experimentation, both fragmentary interfaces and complete stories, representing twenty-two worldviews behind them; the world is constantly changing, and the twenty-two interfaces flick back and forth like clock, representing the twenty-two seconds cycle of constant conversion. Four two-dimensional objects each represents a media and a visual element.

Digtial interactive space can be experienced by audiences through screens.
Five chapters visualizing the process of threading artwork into a 3D space that audience can explore. 1: raising of the firework; 2: explosion; 3: falling and forming tube; 4: threading and ready for interaction. Finally, the program “collapse” automatically within 3 minutes then forming into Conway’s Game of Life, which holds the students work.

The rotating layout of the book echoes the four quadrant of the map. Alongside with the major book, four booklet respectively represent and feature the four corespondent 2D objects that is indicated by the position of the luminous rectangle: rabbit hole-map, shadows-fireworks, random forests-tree, interfaces-Game of Life.

En dedans typeface is made for applications for Giselle new ballet branding. The typeface is inspired from Chinese
characters’ rule of forming a matts pattern of squares and patterns of ballet
footwork. Alphabet doesn’t follow the Latin typography formation. Instead of
having a baseline, uneven negative space, and rags, square character follows a
strict pattern made from a tangential circle, encouraging smooth ligatures and
diverse visual depth.

En dedans means inward in ballet, usually
anticlockwise. It implies the direction of turning. This light feeling typeface is formed by
the movement system of a foot during ballet practice. This typeface visualizes
the tracing and pattern of footwork in En dedans direction abstractly. The strict system is indicated with a systematic formation of the typefaces, which is based on a combinations of a tangent circle.

This typeface is specifically made for theater and
performance uses, such as playbill, banner, and posters applications for a upcoming Giselle ballet performance.&#38;nbsp;Two versions of
booklets are printed to illustrate and apply variable weight. The specific color choice
is to mimic illumination for a better clarity inside dark theaters.

Graphing Ballet is a Riso-graph printed French folded
book that visualizes a collection of deconstructed, progressive, and systematic
ballet movement. The editorial system captures and utilizes the generative nature of ballet steps. Four chapters each contribute to a progressive ballet step from “Tendu”, “Degage”, to “Releve lent”, “Grand battement.” The height of the leg gradually lift up. By bringing this seemingly distant live art from
on stage into visual book form, movement can be analyzed, interpreted, and
recomposed in a manipulatable perspective.

Graphing Ballet presents the universal genre and charts its
neglected movement system through visual language. The project is inspired by the repetitive and
infinite ballet training. Movements gets more intensive every following
chapter. The hardest steps on stage are all based on the smallest and
fundamental tendu with the foot contacting the floor.

The system and essence of the ballet is often overlooked
and misinterpreted. Graphing Ballet not only visualized the rational system of
ballet, but also unseen objective anatomy of this elegant art. Within
compositional book design the texture of Riso helps visualize the dynamic
motion graphically.
